Overview of the Department of Geography
The Department of Geography was established in 1964 and has a long-standing tradition of imparting quality education in Geography. Over the years, the Department has evolved in accordance with changing academic requirements and emerging developments in the discipline.
At present, the Department follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) – CAGP pattern, providing students with a balanced combination of fundamental geographical knowledge, advanced subject knowledge, practical training, and technology-oriented learning.
The curriculum encompasses core areas of Geography such as Physical Geography, Climatology, and Human Geography, along with advanced and application-oriented areas such as Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS). This combination enables students to understand both the theoretical foundations and contemporary technological applications of Geography.
Infrastructure and Learning Facilities
The Department has two well-equipped Cartographic Laboratories that support practical and skill-oriented learning. The laboratories are equipped with 3D maps, charts, and various geographical instruments, providing students with opportunities to develop practical skills in map preparation, interpretation, measurement, and geographical analysis.
The Department also has a Digital Laboratory designed to support ICT-enabled and student-centric learning. The laboratory is equipped with 22 computers with internet connectivity, along with UPS backup, facilitating digital learning, practical exercises, data analysis, and technology-based geographical studies.
The Department is equipped with two LCD projectors, which support multimedia presentations, interactive teaching, digital content delivery, and ICT-integrated classroom learning.
The Department emphasizes a student-centric approach to teaching and learning, integrating classroom instruction with practical work, cartographic exercises, digital learning, and the application of modern geographical technologies. The available laboratory and ICT facilities provide students with opportunities to develop both conceptual understanding and practical competencies.
Through its academic programmes, laboratory facilities, and technology-enabled learning environment, the Department continues its commitment to nurturing students with geographical knowledge, practical skills, analytical abilities, and technological competencies relevant to higher education and diverse applications of Geography.
