About the Department

Postgraduate Department of English was established in 2012. Dr D A Shankar, poet, playwright, translator and Former Professor of English, University of Mysore, was an Emeritus Professor of English in the Department at the time of its inception, and has contributed in moulding the department in the early years. The Department presently offers Masters of Arts (Credit and Semester) Programme in English Literature (4 Semesters), and Doctoral Programme. The Curriculum of the M.A. Programme in English is designed to offer diversity and flexibility to learners; thus it attracts some of the best students in Karnataka and neighboring states. The M.A. Programme has a number of core courses that focus on British, American, Indian and Postcolonial literatures and electives that are drawn from a wide range of contemporary writings and issues. Our faculty also offers elective courses to other departments. Various courses offered create a nuanced understanding among the students of canonical and non-canonical literary and cultural texts as well as their social milieu for an engaged and enduring understanding of life The faculty members have different specializations and have published over 60 research papers and have had successfully completed UGC sanctioned research projects. Since 2016 the department has become a research centre, recognised by the University of Mysore to guide researchers for doctoral degree. Currently there are four research scholars, including 3 UGC NET and KSET holders working on various topics. The
Areas of research include British, American, Indian, Diaspora Literature and Gender Studies.

  • Holistic development of students by building their emotional, academic, social, professional and global competencies.

Objectives

  • To provide students advanced knowledge in terms of understanding literary history, representative literary texts and movements.
  • To create interest in students to read and understand the basics of literary/critical theories.
  • To bring awareness on the importance of criticism as a part of literature and its importance in the interpretation of the literary works.
  • To promote new perspectives on the representative writers and various periods of literature.
  • To train students imparting creative, critical and research skills for better employability.

  • Write focused, organised, well-developed text-based essays.
  • Read, summarize and critically analyse poems, novels and sonnets of different literary periods in British, American, Indian and New Literatures in English.

Important Activities of the Department:

The department conducts Literary Club Activities fortnightly, providing an opportunity to the students to discuss and share their views on recent literary works and brings out a Wall Magazine,
The Passion Never Ends. Group Discussions and Debates are the part of Literary Club activities. Seminars, Webinars, Invited Talks, Special Lectures, Cultural Fests and Educational Tours are also
conducted regularly.

Under the PhD Programme, four researches are working in the areas of Indian Literature in English, Indian Modern English Poetry, Diaspora Fiction and Postcolonial Studies, guided by Dr Syed Hajira Begum, Chairperson and a research guide recognised by the University of Mysore.
