About the Department

Department of Studies in Kannada was started in the year 2011 with a vision to encourage students overall growth in all fields. The curriculum was framed to enable the students to develop competitive spirit, interest in research work and a growth in their respective careers by learning different phases and dimensions of language literature and culture.

The curriculum included the topics like Old Kannada, Medieval Kannada and Modern Kannada along with Poetics, Criticism, Figures of speech, meters, linguistics, folklore, comparative study, research methodology and the knowledge of computers. Curriculum is imparted using latest technology with practical approach. Students are encouraged to prepare projects by studying Literature and Culture. Research work is given prominence to create awareness among students about the importance of research work.

Apart from curriculum many co-curricular activities are conducted giving platform for students for their overall development. They are AIR Mysore Programmes, Literary forum activities, education tours, field visits; student oriented ‘Nanna Nota’ literary gatherings, conferences, special lectures, etc.

Programme Objectives:

· Analysing Old, Medieval and Modern Kannada Literature and its background.

· Studying some major medieval and Modern Kannada literature works.

· Studying various elements that deal with writing pattern like Poetics, Grammar, Linguistics, meter etc.

· Learning through practical criticism and comparative study of literary works

· Studying Literature on various aspects from research point of view.

· Learn to use Kannada utilizing latest technology.

Programme Outcomes:

· Students will be involved in research activities after learning the reading style, speciality and significance of Kannada Language of different periods like old Kannada, Medieval Kannada and Modern Kannada.

· Apart from learning literature they will gain knowledge and know the importance of various poetic devices, grammar and poetics which form literature.

· They will have knowledge about rich culture of linguistics the origin and growth of Kannada Literature with different forms of Kannada language. They will be involved in research activates after this.

· Study of Culture and various types of criticism will help them to involve themselves in the research activates in those areas. This study encourages them to imbibe them in their cultural studies and research.

· Innovative thinking about language, Literature and culture will be developed which help to adopt those ideologies in research activities indirectly enhances knowledge of student and may result in valued writing works.
