About the Department 

The Postgraduate Department of Biochemistry at JSS College of Arts, Commerce and Science, Mysuru possesses an experienced faculty involved in teaching programmes fulfilling the requirements of the postgraduate students. The Department is located on the third floor of the college. The browsing centre, departmental library, lecture hall, instrumentation facility, labs and faculty rooms are on the same floor. The Department is a very successful unit of the college which is firmly committed to excellence both in research and teaching. The department adopts an integrated approach embracing the view that tomorrow's breakthrough are likely to occur at the interface of traditional biological sub-divisions. A Master’s Degree in Biochemistry is the first step towards a wide variety of careers options in pharmaceutical and food industries, in hospital services, and in many biological and medical research divisions.

The Postgraduate Department of Biochemistry was established in 2007 and the postgraduate course started in 2007 and PhD programme in 2012. Faculty, postgraduate students and research scholars are actively involved in several research projects. The Department of Biochemistry has carved a niche in the arena of proteomics, nutritional biochemistry and is geared to serve the needs of the local population. The curriculum is framed in such a way that will allow students to develop knowledge and gain expertise to meet demands of voluminous opportunities at various capacities in Diagnostic and Research Laboratories in a Clinical setup and in Pharmaceutical Companies.

Ojectives:

M.Sc. Biochemistry has been designed to meet the human resources needs of existing and futuristic industries and research organizations involved in pharmaceuticals, enzymes, clinical diagnostics, academic institutions and hospitals. The programme is designed to produce postgraduates with higher order critical, analytical, problem solving and research skills; ability to think rigorously and independently to meet higher level expectations of industries, research organizations, hospitals and academic institutions.

Eligibility for M.Sc. Biochemistry

B.Sc. with Biochemistry/Chemistry as a Major/Optional subject and must have obtained a minimum of 45% (40% in case of SC/ST and Category-I candidates) of marks in Cognate/Optional subjects put together from all the years of the examinations of the course.

 

Entrance Examination conducted by University of Mysore is Compulsory.

Programme Objectives:

M.Sc. Biochemistry has been designed to meet the human resources needs of existing and futuristic industries and research organizations involved in pharmaceuticals, enzymes, clinical diagnostics, academic institutions and hospitals. The programme is designed to produce postgraduates with higher order critical, analytical, problem solving and research skills; ability to think rigorously and independently to meet higher level expectations of industries, research organizations, hospitals and academic institutions.

Programme Outcomes

  1. M.Sc. Biochemistry will provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake a career in research, either in industry or in an academic setting.
  2. The training provided will give students the breadth and depth of scientific knowledge in ‘Biochemistry’ and allied areas.
  3. On completion of the programme, students will be qualified to apply for a PhD or to gain employment in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, clinical research, forensic labs, public health entities, agriculture or biotechnology industries, which are among the strongest growth sectors of the Indian Economy.
  4. The programme will be based on a combination of taught modules, independent learning, if opted, experiential learning through major project work and an option for extended research project to be carried out either in industry or in association with industry at the College.
  5. The programme incorporates a substantial element of hands-on research experience, with enhanced experimental skills being gained alongside experienced research scholars of the Department.

(a) Subject knowledge and understanding

It is intended that, on successful completion of the M.Sc. Degree Programme, students will:

  • Have a sound working knowledge and appreciation of principles and practices of biochemistry
  • Understand the principal techniques of biomolecular structural characterization, including spectroscopy.
  • Have an understanding of bioinformatics and its application in biochemistry.
  • Have an understanding of clinical research and drug development.
  • Improve our overall quality of life

(b) Core academic skills

It is intended that, on successful completion of the M.Sc. Degree Programme, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge and understanding of the principles and theories of biochemistry.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of biochemistry to the solution of problems in biology and practical areas of the subject.
  • Show originality in the application of knowledge, and understand how the boundaries of knowledge are advanced through research.
  • Deal with complex issues in the discipline both systematically and creatively
  • Show originality in tackling and solving problems in the context of the programme.
  • Present scientific material and arguments clearly, logically and correctly, in writing and orally.
  • Apply an understanding of biochemistry at a theoretical and practical level.
  • Think about problems critically at the interface areas between Biology, Chemistry, Medicine and Molecular Biology.
  • Apply knowledge and understanding of biochemistry to the solution of problems of current interest

(c) Personal and key skills

It is intended that, on successful completion of the M.Sc. Degree Programme, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and act autonomously in planning and implementing tasks at a professional or equivalent level
  • Communicate effectively and clearly by verbal, written and visual (poster presentation) means.
  • Know how to retrieve information from a variety of sources, including libraries, databases and the internet.
  • Perform standard laboratory procedures and critically review their practical and or research project.
  • Monitor, by observation and measurement, events or changes, and record such scientific data.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • Recognize their study skills needed for continuing professional development.
  • Work independently or as part of a team in a research setting.

(d) Confirmation of conformity

The M.Sc. in Biochemistry conforms to the standards and specifications of University of Mysore.

Curriculum

The present scheme and syllabus under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Continuous Assessment Grading Pattern (CAGP) is as given in the table below. Students are provided extensive opportunities to deliver seminars. A dissertation and project work will provide an opportunity to test student's learning leading to research.
